Winter is coming! There are a few things that you can do to winterize your tractor that will help be sure that it will be ready to go when you need it.
The most obvious is to check your antifreeze concentration. You can get a very inexpensive coolant tester at your local auto parts store. You need to be sure your coolant freezing temperature is testing at least as low as the record low temp for your area. As water freezes it expands and if it expands in your engine block or radiator- it will ruin them.
Top off your fuel tank. As the temperature outside warms and cools you can develop condensation in your fuel if your tank is not completely filled.
Charge your battery. Keep your battery charged or on a trickle charger over the winter. If a low or dead battery freezes it can cause perminant damage to the cells. A low battery also has much less cranking capacity when it is cold.
Throw away your starting fluid! It is always tempting to break out the starting fluid when it gets cold and your tractor gets hard to start. Starting fluid works great on much larger diesel engines but the tiny Yanmar engines can not tolerate ANY starting fluid. Immediate engine damage WILL happen.
Keep your tires aired up. If your tire goes flat in the winter it can crack out the sidewalls and ruin the tire. This can happen to older tires any time of year but the cold temperatures make the rubber more brittle and prone to cracking.
